President Bola Tinubu has appointed Shehu Dikko as the Chairman of the National Sports Commission after dissolving the Ministry of Sports Development.
This move seeks to create a vibrant sports economy by transferring the ministry’s functions to the commission.
Key Reassignments and Changes
Senator John Owan Enoh, the former Minister of Sports Development, will now serve as the Minister of State for Trade and Investment.
Dikko, a well-known football administrator from Kaduna State, previously chaired the League Management Company, managing the Nigerian Professional Football League. He has also acted as a consultant for the Nigerian House of Representatives Sports Committee and ran for the presidency of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in 2022, stepping down in favor of Ibrahim Gusau, the eventual winner.
New Ministries Established
Alongside these changes in sports governance, President Tinubu has dissolved the Ministry of Niger Delta, replacing it with the Ministry of Regional Development, which will oversee regional development commissions. Additionally, the Federal Ministry of Tourism and the Federal Ministry of Arts and Culture have merged to form the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism, and the Creative Economy.
