Veteran Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress Onyeka Onwenu passed away on Tuesday evening. Ms. Onwenu reportedly died at Reddington Hospital in Lagos after collapsing while performing at the birthday party of Mrs. Stella Okoli.
An eyewitness who attended the party confirmed the sad news to TheNiche, stating, “It is very sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli today (Tuesday, July 30, 2024), and after performing, she slumped. She was taken to Reddington Hospital and she couldn’t make it.”
Born on January 31, 1952, Onwenu, affectionately known as “The Elegant Stallion” by the Nigerian press, made significant contributions to the arts and culture sector. She once served as the chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture. In 2013, she was appointed as the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development.
Onwenu leaves behind a rich musical legacy, including her notable song “Wait for Me,” which she performed with Juju maestro King Sunny Ade.
