A petrol-laden tanker a has exploded on Thursday night, causing traffic gridlock on the Iganmu bridge in Lagos.
The explosion also caused extensive damage to 11 vehicles, including 2 tankers, 1 tipper truck, 3 trailers, 3 cars, and 2 micro-mini buses. Fortunately, no lives were lost in the resulting inferno.
Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Adeseye Margaret, confirmed the incident and assured the public investigation was underway to determine cause of the tanker Explosion.
“The raging fire has been curtailed as the dampening of pockets of Fire continues to allow for an investigation to reveal the cause and the evacuation of the carcass to bring about normalcy,” the statement reads.
“11 vehicles which include: 2 tankers, 1 tipper truck, 3 trailers, 3 cars and 2 micro-mini buses i.e korope.”
However, an eyewitness who spoke to Punch stated that a trailer carrying a container was unable to climb up the bridge was the cause of the accident.
“The container was coming from Apapa. The container climbed the bridge leading to Orile, it could not climb the bridge and fell off at the tail end of the bridge. It then collided with a fuel tanker, which burst into flames.”
