On Monday, November 27, 2023, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMET released a statement addressing the recent rain and thunderstorms experienced in some states during November. NiMET attributed this phenomenon to climate variability arising from natural and atmospheric conditions.
MET clarified that the rainy season in northern Nigeria for the year 2023 has concluded, aligning with earlier predictions made by the agency.
Cloud Build-Up Leads to Thunderstorms
Explaining the events of Saturday, November 25, and Sunday, November 26, NiMET pointed out that reported clouds build-up over the Northwestern and North Central parts of the country, including the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, resulted in the observed thunderstorms.
Despite these thunderstorms, NiMET emphasized that such developments do not alter the overall seasonal prediction but represent temporary fluctuations influenced by weather modulators.
Moisture Influx and High Energy Trigger Cloud Formation
The Meteorological Agency further highlighted that the occurrence of moisture influx and high energy in the atmosphere led to condensation and the formation of clouds. NiMET stressed that such events are not unique to Nigeria.
NiMET Addresses Climate Change in a Global Context
In its statement, NiMET acknowledged the global context of climate change and underscored the impact of human activities on weather patterns.
NiMET pointed out that recent times have witnessed a rise in greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere. This increase is mainly attributed to activities such as the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation.
“This enhanced greenhouse effect is causing changes in the Earth’s climate, a phenomenon commonly referred to as climate change,” explained NiMET.
