The Minister of Labour, Employment, and Productivity, Simon Lalong, is actively engaging with labour leaders in a meeting to prevent a potential shutdown of the nation’s economy as the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC proceeds with its industrial action.
In a directive issued on Monday, the NLC and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC instructed their members to mobilize for a nationwide strike in response to the assault on NLC president Joe Ajaero.
President of TUC, Festus Osifo, asserted during a press conference on Monday, November 13, that the strike will persist until “government at all levels wake up to their responsibility,” emphasizing the commitment of organised labour to implement the resolutions of the National Executive Council.
Punch Newspaper reported on Tuesday morning that union leaders are set to meet with the Bola Tinubu-led government later in the day. Sources revealed, “The minister has convened a meeting with the Labour leaders for Tuesday.”
In the aftermath of an extraordinary National Executive Council meeting in Abuja last Tuesday, the NLC and TUC declared a comprehensive nationwide strike. Subsequently, the national organised labour unions mobilized their members and supporters following the brutalization of NLC National President, Joe Ajaero, in Imo State.
Accusations of complicity in the recent attack on Ajaero were leveled against the former Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Mohammed Barde, by Organised Labour, leading to widespread outrage.
