Game Week 11 served out a number of Firsts in Premier League action this Saturday. Arsenal were served their first defeat of the season as they traveled to Newcastle. Sheffield United on the other hand got their first win. Newshawkng.com gives you the highlights.
Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal
Arsenal fall to their first defeat of the season after a lone goal from Anthony Gordon.
The Gunners came into this encounter with high expectations and superior statistics to their host.
Arsenal have won 19 of their previous 22 matches against Newcastle in all competitions.
Newcastle had also failed to score in eight of the nine most recent league meetings, with the exception a 2-0 home victory in May 2022.
It’s been a scrappy game with lot of desire, a lot of passion, but not a lot in quality. Both sides did not create chances until the hour mark.
Jacob Murphy’s wayward shot is just about kept in play by Joe Willock and the cross is headed down by Joelinton, who appears to push Gabriel, but Anthony Gordon scrambles it in. After a lengthy VAR check of about 2 minutes, the goal was finally given to the home side and that was the only goal of the game.
The result sees an end to the Gunners unbeaten run and may also see them move from second to fifth if Tottenham, Liverpool and Aston Villa all win their outstanding matches.
Manchester City 6-1 Bournemouth
Heading into this game, there was no doubts who would be securing three points. It was just a matter of how many goals. The Citizens did not disappoint even though the usual suspects did not feature in this one. Jeremy Doku was very influential in today’s game, scoring two and providing assists. Other on the goal sheet include Bernardo Silva, Nathan Ake, Phil Foden and Manuel Akanji.
Erling Haaland did not get on the score sheet as he twisted his ankle and had to be substituted for Phil Foden a little after half time.
Luis Sinisterra got a consolation goal for Manchester City. This win puts them at the top of the Premier League table.
Everton 1-1 Brighton
Everton and Brighton shared the spoils as both settled for a draw. Vitalii Mykolenko put Everton ahead for his first Premier League goal in over a year. They held on to that lead for most of the game, it was a ball deflected off Ashley Young that helped the Bees draw level.
Despite retaining most of the possession, Kaoru Mitoma gets the ball on the left, sends Jck Harrison one way and then the other and then his cross takes the biggest of deflections off Ashley Young, which loops over Jordan Pickford into the net
Brentford 3-2 West Ham
It was a goals thriller as Brentford came from behind to beat West Ham. Neal Maupay had at first put Brentford ahead with his first goal in 45 games. Mohammed Kudus then equalised for the visitors with an incredible finish as he hooks a volley into the far corner.
Jarrod Bowen got the second for the Hammers, scoring off of a Kudus fumble on the ball. Bowen becomes the first player to score on his side’s opening six Premier League away games in a season.
Fortune changed for West Ham when Konstantinos Mavropanos scored an own goal on his first Premier League start, heading a cross into the back of the net. Nathan Collins then got winner for the host for his first goal for Brentford.
Burnley 0-2 Crystal Palace
Burnley continued with their bad run when they played host to Crystal Palace. Goals from Jeffrey Schlupp and Tyrick Mitchell ensured the visitors went back with the three points.
Jordan Beyer loses possession to Jordan Ayew who drives it into the box for a Schlupp tap in. The second came from a counter attack. Eberechi Eze lays off the ball to Mitchell who slots it in at 90+4 minutes – 30 seconds before the end of game.
Though Burnley dominated possession and were playing nice in the midfield, they didn’t click in the final third.
The Palace fans were bouncing while Burnley supporters will be wondering what went wrong. Burnley becomes the first Premier League side to lose their first six home matches.
Sheffield United 2-1 Wolves
A late Ollie Norwood penalty ensured hosts Sheffield United first win of the season.
The first half was pretty uneventful first half in Sheffield with the high point being injury to Rhian Brewster. The second half started better but there were limited chances for both sides until the 72nd minute when Cameron Archer let fly an absolute stunner from 20 yards out. Jean-Ricner Bellegarde equalised for Wolves curling into the top right hand corner. But it was Ollie Norwood who got the winner for Sheffield from the penalty spot in injury time.
The home fans go absolutely wild for the Blades first win in 11 games.
Fulham 0-1 Manchester United
Bruno Fernandes scored an injury time winner to ensure the winner for Manchester United.
Scott McTominay had initially opened for the Red Devils at 7 minute before it was ruled for offside.
And it seems they heading for another game without a goal before Fernandes drilled low past Bernd Leno from the edge of the box. The win puts some pressure off manager Eric ten Hag.
