Prominent teams from the Nigerian Women’s Football League, NWFL, are gearing up for the third Betsy Obaseki Football Tournament, BOWFT. The tournament set to unfold in Benin City, Edo State is scheduled for October 23 to November 1, 2023. The extravaganza will witness fierce competition among teams such as Lagos-based Robo FC, Edo Queens, Rivers Angels, and ten others, vying for the substantial N60 million prize money.
The N60 million prize money, as revealed by the local organizing committee, LOC, will be distributed among various categories, including the overall winners, first runners-up, second runners-up, and other participating teams as consolation prizes.
Crusoe Osagie who is Chairman of the Communication Sub-committee of the event, stressed that this competition serves as a pre-season event. It is aimed at preparing teams for the Nigeria women’s league and raising awareness about eliminating gender-based violence.
“Governor Godwin Obaseki-led state government has made significant efforts over the past seven years to combat gender-based violence,” Osagie stated.
The participating teams, including Bayelsa Queens, Delta Queens, Naija Ratels, Nasarawa Amazons, Osun Babes, Confluence Queens, Fortress Ladies, Ekiti Babes, Remo Stars Ladies FC, and Heartland FC, are all set for the tournament recognized by FIFA as a global platform promoting women’s football.
The unveiling of the mascot and the draws for the tournament will precede the kickoff on Monday. The action begins as the 13 confirmed teams arrive in Benin City on Sunday, October 22, 2023. The Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium will be the focal point of activity, hosting a press conference, the unveiling of the mascot, and the tournament draws on Friday, October 20, 2023.
The excitement peaks on Monday when the first matches kick off at 5 p.m. at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium. The tournament will conclude with the third-place and final matches on November 1, 2023. During the closing ceremony, trophies and consolation prizes will be awarded to the participating clubs, marking the end of this thrilling football spectacle.
