The Centre for Democracy and Human Rights have stormed the National Assembly in Abuja on Tuesday, demanding the removal of the newly-appointed Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ola Olukoyede.
The group claims that Olukoyede lack of qualifications for the position. The group’s National Secretary, Adebayo Ogorry, urged Senate President Godswill Akpabio to sack Olukoyede, claiming that President Bola Tinubu violated laws in appointing him.
Ogorry said, “We draw the Senate’s attention to the gross violation of the EFCC Establishment Act 2004 by President Bola Tinubu in appointing Mr Ola Olukoyede as Chairman of the Commission on Thursday, October 12, 2023.”
He emphasized the importance of adhering to the law and preventing seeing a wrong precedent. Ogorry emphasized that the stipulations in the law ensures who ever heads the organization has relevant experience in enforcing EFCC laws.
The EFCC Establishment Act, 2004, specifies that the qualifications for the EFCC chairman, “shall be a serving or retired member of any government security or law enforcement agency not below the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police or equivalent; and possess not less than 15 years cognate experience.”
