Iranian women’s rights champion, Narges Mohammadi, incarcerated in Tehran’s Evin Prison, has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday.
Narges Mohammadi enduring fight is for women’s rights and opposition to the death penalty. The Norwegian Nobel Committee, recognizing her bravery, lauded her as a beacon for recent unprecedented protests in Iran and emphasized the need for her release.
Berit Reiss-Andersen, the head of the Nobel Committee, declared, “We want to give the prize to encourage Narges Mohammadi and the hundreds of thousands of people who have been crying for exactly ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ in Iran.” The committee’s decision has drawn sharp criticism from Tehran, who have denounced it as political meddling in human rights issues.
In her statement to the New York Times, Mohammadi vowed to persist in her pursuit of democracy and equality, even from her prison confines. She remains resolute in combating discrimination and gender-based oppression under Iran’s religious government.
Expressing his joy in Paris, Mohammadi’s husband, Taghi Rahmani, stated, “This Nobel Prize will embolden Narges’ fight for human rights, but more importantly, this is, in fact, a prize for the ‘woman, life, and freedom’ movement.”
Despite numerous detentions and challenges, Mohammadi’s unwavering commitment continues to inspire advocates globally. U.S. President Joe Biden commended her bravery and called for her immediate release, emphasizing the importance of freedom of expression and gender equality.
The Nobel Committee’s recognition arrives amidst reports of a tragic incident in Tehran, where an Iranian teenage girl was hospitalized after a confrontation over her hijab. This incident underscores the urgency of Mohammadi’s mission, resonating with activists worldwide.
While the prize symbolizes global solidarity for women’s rights, experts like Dan Smith from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute believe it might not lead to Mohammadi’s immediate release. However, it serves as a potent reminder of the resilience of women fighting for their rights, even in the face of adversity.
