The Lagos government, has announced the ‘total ban’ on street trading and hawking.
The state made the announcement through its Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab. Also building illegal structures on drainage systems and set backs to sell wares have also been banned. The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources on his X account stated on Friday that their officers will be on hand to enforce this directive.
Officers of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, LAGESC have been directed to enforce compliance. The new directive against street trading and curbside selling is to “curb nefarious activities of hawkers disguising to rob motorists” and “disrupt traffic flow” .
“This move aligns with the zero-tolerance policy under Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration’s T.H.E.M.E Plus Agenda.”
This is not the first time Lagos State has tried to ban or discourage street trading and hawking. In 2016, the then Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, declared a N90, 000 fine or six months jail term for any one caught street hawking.
Earlier, the Lagos government had ordered the immediate closure of Ladipo market in Mushin LGA of the state over reckless waste disposal, unhygienic premises, and non-payment of waste bills.
