The government of Yobe state has said it is lifting ban on the use of motorcycles, popularly known as Okada riding in seven local government areas of the State.
The lifting of the ban is coming 11 years after it was first imposed due to insecurity that plagued the state.
This was disclosed in a statement made available to Daily post, Special Adviser on Security Affairs to Governor Mai Mala Buni, Brigadier General Dahiru Abdul Salam (RTD), the ban was lifted due to an improvement in security in the country.
According to the statement, the ban on the riding of motorcycle is lifted with effect from 6th March 2023 in seven local government areas of Zone A which are: Bursar, Damaturu, Geidam, Gujba, Gulani, Tarmuwa and Yunusari.
According to the statement, the Okada can only operate between the hours of 6am and 6pm. They also cannot be used for commercial purposes.
“There will be no conveyance of passengers on motorbikes. Only a rider will be allowed without any other person on the motorbike.
“There should be proper registration, licensing, and documentation of all motorbikes and riders in the affected LGAs by the Yobe State Road Traffic Management Agency, YOROTA, and the Yobe State Vehicle Licensing Authority,” the statement read.
Other conditions are that: all owners of motorcycles are to operate within their respective local governments only and there should be no conveyance of passengers as violators of these conditions would be sanctioned in accordance with extant rules and regulations.
